Brito is learning to “find” fronts – first on his own and then with a dumbbell.
He’s wearing a leash to prevent him from running off to pee on the bushes. He is very fond of peeing on things lately.
Note that I no longer click for retrieving – he is now rewarded for “finding front” and sitting after he retrieves the dumbbell to me. Those are steps within a behavior chain – each one was taught separately. If I run into troubles with the retrieve, then I will isolate that piece and work on it alone.
When you want a dog to find front, look where you want the dog to be, not at the dog. It helps to “pilot” them in and also prevents them from just staring at you.
the walking away to the bushes reminds me of Cody 🙂
Okay I now know I am WAY behind the learning curve teaching fronts and can’t wait to go home and work on this with my pups. I love the idea of feeding them from behind to get them in close! YAY light bulb moment for Mom.
This are great tips. I love dogs so much. They are amazing creatures and truly man’s best friend. Finding front is one that I would love to master with my pet. Time to start working on that!
