Following up on my webinar from last night, here are more thoughts on socialization, taken from a facebook live I did about a month or two ago. I hope someone finds it useful!
Thanks to all of you who joined me; I had a great time!

My two year old border collie pup is so excited/arroused each and every time he goes outside that I can not train him for at least 30 minutes. He will fetch or tug and I can use that to engage him but that keeps his excitement level so high and he is not really engaging with me he is focused on the toy even when he is giving me eye contact he is seeing that as a means to an end not enjoying our interaction. What can I do to help change his ability to be relaxed enough in familiar situations to engage and train?

Hi, I have a 12 month old Manchester terrier. I have been giving him a treat when people or dogs are approaching us or when we stop to talk to the people. I understand from your video that this is not the correct thing to be doing. Should I stop giving a treat and just walk by…let him bark and just walk by? Sometimes he will walk by approaching people and not bark other times he will bark… I started to use a treat to stop him barking at people
I don’t usually tell people what they “should” do without seeing the dog – just too many unknown variables.
Take a look at this class if you want to learn about handling and improving on issues of reactivity:

Getting a puppy in about a month and really enjoyed the Pre-Engagement webinar and this Facebook Live Blog video. Guilty of using too much food all the time as Tanner grew up ; hoping to not repeat that scenario with the new pup.
Thanks so much for all you share Denise!
GREAT thoughts on socialization!!! I know I’ve been guilty of working too hard on “training” and not letting the pup process the environment, especially with a pup who is food driven and highly focused naturally. Thanks for the video blog.
This is one of the best educational and clarifying videos of proper socialization and exposure that I have ever come across. It helps me clearly understand the things I am doing both right and wrong with one of my girls who is hyper aware in new places. I will be sharing this over and over again.
Thank you
I’m truly glad you found it so valuable; thank you for letting me know!
